Jamil Bashir, 'Ud

Jamil Bashir was born in Mosul, Iraq in 1921 and is the brother of Munir Bashir. His father, who was a singer, oud player and oud maker, started to teach him the oud when he was around six years old. When the Iraqi Music Institute opened in 1936, Jamil enrolled to learn oud with Sherif Muheddin Haydar and violin with Sando Alio. He finished his oud study in 1943 and his violin study in 1946, graduating with honours degrees in both instruments, and then worked at the Institute as an oud and violin teacher. At the same time he became the head of the Baghdad Radio Orchestra and then the Baghdad Radio Music Department. He also wrote a two-volume book on oud method. Jamil Bashir was also a good singer, but he did not continue singing as he preferred the oud. He died in London on 24th September 1977. This is fortunately no longer a place holder but the real thing as the LP has materialized, thanks to a good friend in music who follows this blog. He generously offered a copy and supplied the scans and although there are a few minor skips I think it is more than adequate.

I am sure many already know this artist well. I am more a fan of his brother Jamil, but I am not that happy about the 'Ud "in concert" and have rather "simpler" tastes. I enjoy more the occasional Ud taksim in a takht or the role of accompaniment to vocals better. Judge for yourself. Jamil did wonderful oud playing accompanying Selima Murad, but more on that later.

So, anyhow lets start with volume one. Munir Bashir...

EMI Pathé - Arabesques - Series of Arabic Instrumental Music

Here finally, is something I wanted to share for a long, long time. I have been editing and pruning for quite a while and only the last couple of days did it get close to the quality I like.

In the beginning of the seventies EMI Pathé started a series called Arabesques, oddly enough there is almost no traces of this production on the web. No reissues on CD to my knowledge, and nothing shared. A couple of questions in Mikes oud bulletin board, a dutch collector has some copies, occasionally there is an odd volume for sale. Actually there seems to be ten volumes all together. I only had five and now after all these years I can only find four. The ones I can locate are the three 'Ud records, and one Qanun. The missing one was nay, If someone has a copy of that I would be delighted! I remember it was good, but the player Selim Kusur I think has other solo nay records that may be available. He is a very good nay player and I am sure many of you are familiar with his music. He is well represented on many recordings and used to make frequent appearances in various ensembles on Syrian National TV. He is very good now but it would be nice to compare with what he sounded like back then, but alas, it is gone. Well it may appear by fluke, maybe it is just misplaced and hiding in some shelf.

To start this of properly here is the promotion folder that I kept for all these years. I still remember having only one of the volumes and now and then looking at this brochure, while waiting for the others to materialize.
