The following pictures of old instruments from the Phnom Penh Museum

in the 1960's, makes one wonder how they have fared over the years,

since the people there have met so hard times.

The last track is not listed nor mentioned either in the liner notes to accompany the LP nor is it mentioned in the reviews. It is doubly sad becuse the anonymous singer has such good voiceculture that it would be interesting to read more about the tradition it was a manifestation of. If anyone has more information to shed some light on this track I would be most delighted. Maybe it was added on the second pressing but no mention is made to that effect.

If someone can point me to other releases of early recordings of Cambodian music, i.e. more specifically from the pre CD era I would be overjoyed! It seems that there were very few made!

I will soon post one more from a french label, with some recordings that I also find rather interesting, made by Jaques Brunet and published in 1971.

Bärenreiter Musicaphon - Discography # 2

The German record company Bärenreiter started in the beginning of the sixties of the previous century the first series of what was later to become no less than six different series. The various series covered mostly Asia, but also Africa and Oceania. I have already posted the list of items published in their catalogue for the Premiere Anthologie de la Musique Malienne in this post here.

This post is the second, and that each will attempt to list all of the titles that I am aware of from each series. The Unesco Collection was the first, and started 1961 under the editorial direction of the french musicologist Alain Daniélou.

The recordings presented on these 2 LP's were made during two periods of stay in Idege in Nigeria, the first from September to December in 1965 and the second from August 1971 to March 1972. Recorded with a Nagra III and a dynamic microphone MD 21. The Igede live on the southern edge of the Benue Plateu mainly within the Oturkpo division.

The notes accompanying this release are a most valuable resource for the understanding of what social context and for what purpose this music was played and made and they make good reading while listening to the album. It is evident that a lot of research has gone into the analysiz of texts and rituals and there is much to be understood about the cosmology and traditions of the Idege by perusal of the accompanying notes.
